Who doesn’t love barbecue food on a warm sunny summer evening in the company of family and good friends? Even the newest barbecue chef needs tools so if you are stuck for a present these will be received with delight and you may even get to enjoy the fruits, or burgers, of their labours. Some BBQ accessories such as tongs, a spatula and a wire brush are absolute essentials, but other bits of kit can really make life easier. If you always overcook chicken, ’just to be on the safe side’ then investing in a digital temperature probe will give you a moist, juicy, tasty bird and steaks can be cooked to perfection. Investing in a Weber iGrill or a Traeger wood pellet grill with temperature probes linked to WiFi will take your grilling to a whole new level. A few pounds invested in vegetable baskets, foil drip trays or a griddle will open up a whole new world of BBQ recipes. Go to our Youtube channel where you will find masses of videos showing you exactly what is possible to cook on your barbecue, and a whole host of tips on how to make the most of your kit. Check out our Events page where you will find details of BBQ classes and demos held here in the store in Ambleside. The Hayes Garden World internet sales team are on hand to answer any queries you may have about the products featured on our website, so please give them a call.

Buyers guide to barbecue accessories

Every barbecue needs the correct tools and accessories and The Barbecue Shop, located in the store at Ambleside, has everything you need and a whole lot you never thought you would need. If you’re ever stuck for a present for the barbecuer in your life we’re sure to have something suitable. There are some tools which are absolutely essential, such as two sets of long handled tongs and spatula, one set for raw food and one set for cooked. A wire brush, heat resistant gloves and digital temperature probe to make sure you don’t overcook your food also make grilling a whole lot easier. Once you’ve used the temperature probe, you’ll wonder how you ever managed without one; dry chicken and overcooked steaks will be a thing of the past. Click here to watch the videos Ian Hodgett, our Barbeque Shop manager, and top BBQ chef Richard Holden have made; they cover all things barbecue from recipes and advice to Traeger technical advice. A rub or a sauce can elevate a simple piece of chicken or brisket from the ordinary to the extraordinary, we have the Angus and Oink range online but many more in The Barbecue Shop in store. The rule for rubs and sauces is simple; rubs at the start of the cook and sauce about 20 minutes before the end; if you put the sauce on at the beginning the food tends to burn as they have a fairly high sugar content.Cast iron skillets and griddles enable you to cook dishes which are too fragile to go straight onto the grate, such as delicate fish fillets, eggs, omelettes and so much more; click here to see how to cook delicious eggs in a spicy tomato sauce, ideal for brunch served with crusty sourdough bread. A Dutch oven will enable you to cook anything which requires a sauce such as stews or moules mariniere; click here to read the blog and watch how to cook a tasty warming beef goulash. The Weber vegetable trays can be used not only to cook vegetables and prawns but turned upside down is ideal for cooking salmon. The Weber accessories allow you to cook almost anything on your grill that you can cook indoors; pancakes, sandwiches, kebabs, stir fries, spit roast chickens or porchetta, risottos and the good old traditional English breakfast. Flavoured wood chips and pellets inject your dishes with an extra level of subtle flavour so you have to make sure you use the appropriate flavour for the food you are cooking; if you are in any doubt as to which flavours suit which food just call the team in The Barbecue Shop. Wood chips are suitable for a quick cook whereas the chunks are for the ‘low and slow’ briskets and ribs. Our barbecue buyer Ian Hodgett is a passionate barbecuer who uses his grill year round, even cooking the turkey on it at Christmas; click here to read the blog and watch the video showing how to cook the Christmas turkey on a Weber charcoal Master-Touch. If you are new to barbecuing and not sure which one is for you just call the team in The Barbecue Shop and you can test drive the model of your choice. They will book you a slot and have the grill ready for you, all you need to do is bring your bangers and burgers. The staff will be on hand to give you cooking tips and answer any queries you may have. Click here to get some recipe ideas from our blogs and videos. We regularly hold BBQ masterclasses and demos in the store at Ambleside so keep an eye on the Events page to see when the next classes are occurring.

FAQ

What barbecue accessories are essential?
You will need long handled tools to prevent you getting burned; 2 sets of tongs and spatula, one set for raw food and another set for cooked to avoid cross-contamination. A wire grill brush is essential as you need to brush down the grill after every cook. Digital thermometers enable you to cook your food to perfection, so you can say goodbye to undercooked burgers, salmonella chicken and tough overdone steaks. A pair of thermally insulated BBQ gloves are absolutely essential if you are using cast iron accessories, vegetable baskets, kebabs or rotisserie.
How often do I need to replace my accessories?

All our BBQ accessories are from the top barbecue manufacturers and if treat in the appropriate manner they should last at least 15 years, with the cast iron lasting a lifetime.

What accessories are the best value for money?

The Dutch oven allows you to cook a whole range of stews, casseroles and hotpots. A cast iron griddle or skillet will allow you to cook small fish such as scallops and prawns and delicate fish fillets such as plaice and mackerel which otherwise would be difficult to remove from the grill. They are also useful for cooking the good old English breakfast. The skillet enables you to cook omelettes and scrambled eggs and sauces.
