FAQ

Stephen Cooper. Stephen has worked at Hayes for over 30 years in the various gardening departments so is one of the best people to give advice on gardening equipment and all things wildlife. He is responsible for sourcing the wildlife food and accessories, so can find the products he knows Hayes customers will love.

Where is the best place to site my bird feeders?

Birds are very wary of being ambushed by predators so site your feeders where they have good vision all around. They also need somewhere to shelter if they are threatened by predators so a nearby thick bush where they can hide would be beneficial.

Where is the best place to site a nest box?

Site your nest box on the north side of the house or tree so it is out of the direct sun as nestlings can easily overheat if they are in direct sunlight.

Is it worth paying extra for RSPB bird care?

Yes the RSPB has a reputation second to none and as such it puts it's products through extensive trials so the customer can be assured they are buying the best on the market.

How do I avoid attracting rodents when I feed the birds?

If possible site the feeders over a concrete pad or paving slab which can easily be swept clean. Clean underneath the feeders every day taking care to avoid leaving any food around overnight. If rodents are climbing up your feeding table of feed station install a baffle to prevent them climbing the pole. Alternatively take in the feeders overnight and store in a rodent proof container, not plastic as rats can easily chew through, ideally use a metal container. Store the spare feed in a metal container with a tight lid which can't be opened by rodents, rats are smarter than you think.
