FAQ

Ian Hodgett. Ian is a passionate barbecuer and owns several grills from the various companies. He stars in the videos on the Hayes Youtube channel
alongside top BBQ chef Richard Holden. If you need answers to your BBQ questions or just some tips for easy delicious recipes then The Barbecue Shop in store is the place to head to. He also organises the many hands-on BBQ courses held here in store.

I've never barbecued before so need some help deciding which one to buy, is there anyone who can help?

There are a lot of factors to consider when buying a new BBQ. What fuel do you want? Charcoal is traditional, takes longer to come to temperature and is harder to control. Gas is quick, easy and clean but purists don't think food tastes the same as off charcoal. Electric grill tend to be quite small. How many are you going to cook for? Buy a bigger grill than you thin you will need. Finally, buy at the very top of your budget as a well known reputable brand will last a lot longer then a cheap grill. If you would like more info just get in touch with the team in The Barbecue Shop here in store and they will be able to advise.

I'm just a BBQ beginner, is there anywhere I can learn more?

Yes, we hold BBQ courses here in the store which are designed to suit anyone of any ability. They are led by 2 of the industries top BBQ chefs. You will learn how to regulate the temperature of your grill, what to cook on the different heat zones and how to cook some delicious food and of course eat it. Keep an eye on our Events page for upcoming courses. We recommend booking early as they are very popular and spaces are limited.

Does BBQ food off a gas grill taste the same as that cooked on charcoal?

The purist barbecuers will always argue that charcoal is the only way to cook authentic BBQ food, however with the addition of a smoker box and flavoured wood chips your gas grill can produce exactly the same smoky flavour. The advantages gas have over charcoal is that they are quicker to come to temperature and there are no messy ashes to discard at the end of the cook. Check out the blog and video where we compare burgers cooked over gas, charcoal and electric, you may be surprised at the results.

What size BBQ do I need?

The size of your barbecue depends on the amount of people that you will be cooking for. If you are regularly using your BBQ to entertain, then one of the Traeger wood pellet grills or a gas Weber Genesis with 6 burners will enable you to cook for a large party or just immediate family. If you just want the BBQ for yourself rather than entertaining then one of our smaller Weber gas or charcoal BBQs would be big enough.

Can they be left outside all year round?
Yes, they are all built to withstand the British weather however covering them if they are sited under trees or on the birds flight path is recommended. Covering them or taking them under cover in winter isn't necessary but will prolong their life span and keep them looking pristine longer.
