If possible site the feeders over a concrete pad or paving slab which can easily be swept clean. Clean underneath the feeders every day taking care to avoid leaving any food around overnight. If rodents are climbing up your feeding table of feed station install a baffle to prevent them climbing the pole. Alternatively take in the feeders overnight and store in a rodent proof container, not plastic as rats can easily chew through, ideally use a metal container. Store the spare feed in a metal container with a tight lid which can't be opened by rodents, rats are smarter than you think.

Yes the better quality brands have carried out research on the optimum mix for providing the birds with seeds and grains which they will eat and not spit onto the ground. Better quality blends also don't use grains which germinate all over the garden.
