This depends upon how quickly the algae builds on the surface. Paths and patios will need to be treated more regularly as they could present a slip hazard if there is a build up of algae, whereas a statue could look attractive with a covering of algae. If the path is in the shade and soon becomes covered in algae maybe consider swapping the hard path surface for gravel or chipped bark which would not require the same degree of maintenance.
