How To Support Cucumbers Growing In The Greenhouse

Cucumbers need to grow up a support to let maximum light ripen the fruits

Home grown produce tastes so much better than that bought from the supermarket but when it comes to cucumbers you really need a greenhouse as they need as much heat as possible especially in the UK with our increasingly erratic summer weather. A cucumber plant fully laden with fruit is fairly heavy so make sure any support you provide is sturdy enough to carry the weight. We have used canes and string but you can also run wires across the greenhouse and run strings down from that.

You will need:

  • canes - 210cm (7’)
  • soft string

Place 3 canes in a tripod shape approximately 30 – 40 cm (12 – 16”) across at the base and tie the tops together. As the cucumber grows wind it gently around the canes and tie in with soft string.

or

Stretch a wire from one side of the greenhouse to the other, making sure it is taut. Push in a cane beside the cucumber and tie the top to the wire. Tie in the cucumbers as they grow.
