Hayes Garden World ensures that wherever possible our wooden furniture is manufactured from COC (Chain of Custody) sustainably sourced timber.

COC vision statement:

".... world's forests meet the social, ecological, economic rights and needs of the present generation without compromising those of future generstions."

The COC is a non-profitable organisation which promotes and aids the development of standards of forestry throughout the world. It is responsible for the monitoring of certified operations and protects the COC trademark thus allowing consumers to choose their goods from well managed sources who’s commercial timber operations are executed in an environmentally responsible and socially beneficial manner. Consequently all timber with the COC Trademark will mean that the forest from which it was felled will be sustainable and will not contribute to deforestation. The timber is tracked from the forest from which is is sourced to the end product ready to be sold to the consumer. There are 3 types of classification:

• 100% sustainable timber
• COC mix (may contain elements from non-sustainable sources)
• COC recycled

There are 10 principles by which the COC adhere:

1. compliance with the law and the COC principles
2. tenure and use rights and responsibilities
3. rights of indigenous peoples
4. workers rights and good community relations
5. maintain the long term economic, social and environmental benefits from the forest
6. maintain and restore the biodiversity, resources, landscape and ecosystem
7. ensuring the management plan is implemented, monitored and documented
8. forest assessment and monitoring
9. maintain the high conservation value forests
10. plan and manage plantations in accordance with COC principles

COC members include some of the world’s leading environmental Non-governmental Organisations such as Greenpeace and the WWF, businesses which focus on being environmentally aware in the manufacture of their paper products eg. Tetra Pak and Mondi plc., and social organizations like the National Aboriginal Forestry Association of Canada and The Woodland Trust. Also included are the many processing companies, forest owners and managers, campaigners, and individuals.

This contrasting group of people defines best practices for forestry that addresses social and environmental issues. The membership consensus sets the COC Principles and Criteria  representing the highest standards of forest management which are environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable. To guarantee that no one viewpoint dominates the others, COC membership has three chambers i.e. environmental, social and economic, each possessing equal rights in decision-making. Finally, in order to ensure that the COC membership has globally fair representation, members represent either North or South sub-chambers.

 Our membership to the COC means that we are audited each year to ensure that we are following the guidelines of the COC, this permits us to advertise COC products with the use of their logos.
