“Herbie” Rides into Ambleside in aid of Alzheimer’s Research

Visitors to the spectacular Christmas Displays at Hayes Garden World can now say hello to “Herbie”, a vintage VW Beetle lovingly restored in the image of the star of those  much-loved Disney films. Herbie will be on display from now until Christmas, where he will be collecting any monies donated in aid of The Alzheimer’s Society.  Visitors to the garden centre are welcome to take their own photos of Herbie in return for a donation to Alzheimer’s Society funds.

Herbie’s owner, Chris Ritchie from Barrow, explains:

“We have restored our “Herbie” to look as close to the Disney original as we can and he is now very much part of the family.   Herbie shares his registration initials, “EMY 683 J”, with my daughter, Emily Jayne and when we saw that we just knew we had to have him. He now works hard to raise funds on behalf of the Alzheimer’s Society in memory of Vincent Hall, my father-in-law, whom we sadly lost to this awful disease in January 2010.   Herbie has helped us to raise several thousand pounds through his support at various sponsored events. Recently, he supported me in my 50-mile “Tour-de-Furness” cycling challenge where we raised £700. People of all ages seem to love him and we hope that having him on display in such a prominent location in the run-up to Christmas will help us to raise lots of money for this very worthy cause”.

Herbie will be on duty at Hayes Garden World, Ambleside seven days a week from now until Christmas Eve. Hayes Christmas Displays are open daily between 9am and 6pm, Sundays 11am – 5pm.

Coffee Morning in support of Macmillan Cancer Care

On Friday 30th September we hosted our annual coffee morning in support of MacMillan Cancer Care. All the proceeds from any coffee's and delicious, specially baked cakes, were donated to this very worthy cause. In addition to the coffee morning, we also held a charity raffle with some great prizes on offer.

To our delight, a record £775 was raised this year. Our Terrace Café Manager, Julie Wray, commented: “Last year, our coffee morning raised almost £550, so it was a tough target to beat. Thanks to the efforts of our customers and staff and the fabulous autumn weather, we have been able to smash last year's target in aid of this very worthy cause.”

42nd Annual Kendal Torchlight Carnival

This year's event is on Friday 9th September & after their 2010 success, winning Best Float for a Commercial Organisation, the staff at Hayes Garden World are throwing themselves into this year's theme of 'Kendal's Got talent', with great enthusiasm. The title of the float for 2011 is 'Blooming Talented' & once again we will get the chance to see the staff dressed in some fabulous, if not outrageous, costumes! Sources tell me that the display is going to bigger & better than before and it will be accompanied once again by Ulpha590. This woodworking 4 piece band describe themselves as an Indie/Rock band that will 'get your event going'. They will be playing a range of songs that you will all recognise including hits from The Rolling Stones & The Police. So come along on Friday evening to watch this 2 mile procession wind through the historic town centre streets & over the bridges of Kendal & support our staff & the local charities that will be collecting during the evening.

Windermere Schools Initiative Bears Fruit

Hayes Garden World hosted a prize-giving session for children from Windermere Primary Schools at 11am on Monday, 11th July. The awards ceremony was  the culmination of the “Fruity Schools” initiative, developed by local community organisation, Windermere Food Group, established with the aim of encouraging more fruit growing in the Windermere area, under the umbrella of local volunteer group, *TACT. Those pictured are Thomas Gudgeon & Eiran Reynolds (St Marys Infant & Nursery),  Milosz Budzynski & Beth Backhouse (St Cuthberts) Jordan Mitchinson, Lucy Hill & Hannah Griffiths (Goodly Dale) with Yvonne Gregory and Mrs Elizabeth Hayes from Hayes Garden World.

Hayes Garden World was asked to lend its support to this local community initiative and was delighted to oblige. The company donated strawberry plants and planters to all the local Windermere schools, and provided two staff members to go into schools and get the project rolling. Children at the various schools have spent the past few months tending their strawberry plants and colourfully decorating their pots and planters. Other activities have included artwork projects and diaries,  all on the theme of fruit growing and gardening.

Leanne Coulson, Project Coordinator for Hayes Garden World, commented:

“We were delighted to support this local schools initiative as it combines support for more local fruit growing with our own aim of encouraging a love for growing and gardening through our “Budding Young Gardeners” initiative.  My colleague, Yvonne Gregory, and I visited all the participating schools earlier this year, where we worked with the children and helped them to plant their strawberries.  We visited all the schools again recently to judge their progress, and are delighted to have been able to host the prize-giving when each participating school was awarded  a fruit tree, courtesy of Hayes Garden World, to be planted for posterity in the grounds of their school”.

* TACT - Towards a Community Transition in Windermere, Bowness-on-Windermere & Troutbeck Bridge in Cumbria is a volunteer group formed in February 2010. Windermere Food Group is a sub-group of TACT and is aiming to have fruit growing in every household in the Windermere/Bowness area. It is made up of community members wanting to work with sustainability issues & green awareness in the local community following the Transition Towns model.
Encouraged and supported by SLACC, and working with diverse groups such as the Windermere Town Council, Sustainable Carlisle and others. TACT has been working to create events throughout 2010 & 2011, gathering together creative, like-minded and enthusiastic people - with a view to having fun and working together towards greater community resilience.

The UK's only BBQ Experience Roadshow comes to Ambleside!

For the first time, Weber -the world's most popular barbecue brand- is taking its unrivalled barbecuing expertise on the road and educating the nation about how to barbecue the Weber way.

Travelling the length and breadth of the country, the Weber Experience BBQ Roadshow will be rolling into Hayes Garden World, Ambleside, on the weekend of 16th and 17th April.

Chef Dan Cooper will be at the helm of the specially designed, state of the art Airstream Land-Yacht trailer, holding barbecuing demonstrations that are sure to tantalize everyone's taste buds!

‘Barbecue Bill' will show the audience how to perfect Weber's ‘roast', ‘grill' and ‘bake' techniques, as well as providing recipe cards so dishes can easily be re-created at home.  There'll also be tasters available for visitors to the BBQ Experience Roadshow, to help inspire barbecue buffs to try out something a bit more adventurous.

Barbecuing the Weber way isn't just about burgers and sausages, and so there'll be the chance to learn how to barbecue a more exciting and varied menu.

The latest gas and charcoal Weber barbecues will be on show, along with the striking new colourful cookware accessories.

The Weber BBQ Experience Roadshow will fire up from 11.30am - 2.30pm.

Antiques Valuation Day raises record amount in aid of The Great North Air Ambulance Appeal

The Antiques Valuation Day held on Tuesday 5th April at Hayes Garden World in Ambleside raised over £800, which will be donated in full to the Great North Air Ambulance Appeal.

Members of the public were invited to bring in any items for expert assessment and valuation by a team of experts from Tennant's Auctioneers, in return for a £2 "valuation fee" in aid of the Great North Air Ambulance appeal.

Tennant's  Auctioneers were delighted with the event, not only in respect of the money raised for this worthy cause, but also due to fact that a record number of items have been put  forward to be sold at one of their future specialist antiques auctions.

Tennant's spokesperson, Alison Tennant, commented:

"Our team of experts always enjoy coming to Hayes at Ambleside as we have unearthed some really interesting finds in the past, including a very rare tinplate model toy which we later sold at auction for an astounding £38,000! We hope that with further investigation we may find some more real treasures among the items put forward for auction today".

Hayes Garden World event organiser, Julie Wray added:

" We are all delighted with the total we have raised today, particularly as the Great North Air Ambulance receives no government funding at all.  Every drug, paramedics' wages, fuel supplies and all associated costs have to be raised and paid for directly by charity itself".
