Get your orchid MOT-ed at Hayes Garden World

Orchid owners are invited to Hayes Garden World to receive free advice and MOTs for their plants.

One of the UK’s leading suppliers of plant nutrition products and an award-winning orchid grower have teamed up to host an Orchid Day at Hayes Garden World in Ambleside. Chris Channon, a Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) gold medallist, said: “I’m delighted to be representing Growth Technology at Hayes Garden World’s Orchid Day.

“The event gives orchid lovers the opportunity to find out how to best look after their plants, as well as have any of their queries answered.

“People are welcome to bring their own orchids along during the day. I’ll be able to give them a free orchid MOT during my orchid clinic and diagnose any problems they may have, as well as give handy ‘dos and don’ts’ on how to treat their orchids, especially when they’re not at their best.” In between these formal sessions Chris will be on hand to answer questions & give advice.

Three top orchid care tips:

1. Water: don’t over water. More orchids are killed by over watering than anything else, so it’s important that you leave an orchid until the roots and compost are almost dry before watering again.

2. Feed: orchids benefit from a correctly balanced and quality feed, however it’s important to water between feeds. They don’t like a build up of salts in their growing medium so it’s vital to flush an orchid with water before feeding again to avoid any build up.

3. Shade: keep orchids in the shade. In the wild orchids grow under the jungle canopy and are mostly in the shade. Because of this it’s important to keep them out of direct sunlight.”

Chris managed Deva Orchids, a successful orchid nursery near Chester, for more than 21 years before he retired from growing and showing orchids in December, 2008. He is now using his knowledge and experience to support Growth Technology’s Orchid Days by informing orchid owners about looking after the exotic plants and offering free advice on any issues they may have.
