Ian Hodgett
Furniture and Barbecue Buyer
Ian has worked for Hayes since leaving school, spending the majority of this time in the outdoor furniture department and like Keith has an in-depth knowledge of Hayes customers. He also has the same ethos at heart when buying garden furniture; will it be an acceptable price and quality? He also takes into account the changing fashions and environmental considerations, such as using recycled materials, being recyclable at the end of its life and is the timber sourced from forests which have a re-planting policy. Ian’s other passion is barbecuing which resulted in Hayes having one of the few Weber Worlds within The Barbecue Shop here in store. The Barbecue Shop has gained a reputation as being one of the best places in north west England to obtain all your BBQ requisites as it stocks everything you need apart from the food. Some of our best sellers are the Angus & Oink and Traeger rubs and sauces which can elevate your food from the ordinary to the absolutely divine. Ian regularly posts on Instagram the results of his grilling labours and it’s not just the usual barbecue fare of bangers and burgers. If you head to the Hayes Garden World Youtube channel you can view almost 200 videos Ian has appeared in with top BBQ chef Richard Holden. These videos show you that there is no limit to the creative dishes you can cook on your BBQ, whether it’s fuelled by gas, charcoal, electric or wood pellets. Almost all the dishes are simple and well within the capabilities of any barbecuer, they range from the Christmas dinner to puddings to vegetarian dishes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answered by our expert 'Ian Hodgett'
All the garden furniture sold by Hayes is fully weatherproof and technically doesn't need covering, however covering your bench over winter will ensure it lasts longer and retains its pristine appearance.
No they are not 100% waterproof as they need to be breathable. If they were 100% waterproof they would attract condensation underneath them which would encourage the formation of mould on the bench, so a good airflow is essential. Placing an upturned bucket on the seat underneath the cover will stop the water pooling on the cover.
No, unfortunately some of the benches don't have a dedicated cover however some of the other makes may fit. If you are unsure as to which cover will fit please call the Customer Services team on the number at the top of the website and they will be happy to advise.

Buyers guide to garden bench covers. A garden bench cover is a great investment, protecting your bench from the elements and prolonging it’s lifespan. First of all is check if your particular bench has a dedicated cover specifically designed for your bench. If not take the measurements of the bench and check to see if there is another brand which will fit. If you are struggling to find a suitable alternative call our Customer Services team on the number at the head of the website and they will be able to suggest a solution.

Check the material the bench cover is made from, budget options are not necessarily the best value for money, often constructed from flimsy material with no means of securing them to the bench. The material needs to be fairly heavyweight be showerproof and breathable and have cords or buckles to secure it to the legs of the garden bench. The fabric needs to be breathable otherwise condensation builds up on the inside of the cover which leads to the growth of moulds on the bench. If the cover is vinyl or plastic make sure it has mesh panels to ensure good airflow. Placing an upturned bucket on the seat underneath the cover will help it shed water and prevent water from pooling on the bench cover.

The fabric needs to be easy to clean, especially if your garden bench is positioned underneath the flight path of birds. If you need help please call the Customer Services team on 015394 82333 and they will be happy to answer your queries.
