Sewing Inspiration In The Lake District

Sarah has been sewing since she was five years old, when her Mum taught her how to make clothes for her dollies. Sarah says "I really enjoy the challenge of creating items from a flat piece of material to a beautiful dress or a quilt for my grandsons’ crib. Over the years, I have made many items for my family, from tailored jackets to bridesmaid dresses, curtains to cushions".

"Sewing, for me, is very therapeutic. The full pleasurable experience starts from going in to the fabric shops to select the fabrics I will use and remains with me right up until I have the finished article ready to use, wear or sell. Having been sewing for most of my life, I have really enjoyed watching the BBC’s Great British Sewing Bee, taking great pleasure in watching people from all walks of life, spanning the ages as well as both sexes, seeing them flourish in front of my eyes over the weeks".

Waterproof Bench Mat

Sarah is always on the look out for new design ideas & the idea for a Waterproof Bench Mat came when she & her husband visited the Lake District. "We had been out for the morning and were looking for somewhere to have a picnic but, because it had been raining, all the benches were wet. Inspiration flashed and the idea of an easily portable and lightweight waterproof bench mat struck me as the ideal solution. As soon as we returned home I set about making some and decided to take some along to a local craft fair to see what response I would get. They proved so popular at this first craft fair and, with people asking if I had a website where they could order more and direct their friends too, Sarah’s Sewing was born".

"Since then, my website has gone from strength to strength and I am regularly adding new product lines. All the items I make for sale, including the Waterproof Bench Mat, feature on my website & are hand sewn in my cottage in the Chew Valley. I only use the finest quality fabrics and because all products are handmade, no two items are identical".

As the idea for my website came from a trip the Lake District, I would like to offer Hayes Garden World customers a special offer on the Waterproof Bench Mats - £9.00 each, buy 2 for £15.00 inc. P&P.

Sarah's Sewing Designs

Whether you are an accomplished seamstress or just a beginner, sewing can help to take away the stresses of your busy life, helping you to relax. You don’t need to have the really expensive sewing machines to create a vast array of different items, even just having a straight and zigzag stitch will allow you to make a really special dress. It is important, however, to have good sharp scissors, a cutting board, straight edge and a roller cutter if you are planning to make patchwork quilts. Don’t be afraid to let your imagination take you outside your comfort zone, you’ll be amazed at what you can create if you just give it a try.
