How to cook hasselback potatoes on the Traeger Timberline 850 wood pellet grill
These delicious easy potatoes are the perfect accompaniment to your steak
These potatoes are one of the staples of the American barbecue but we are starting to realise, here in the UK, that they are really easy and absolutely delicious, like a cross between baked and roast potatoes. You don’t have to do enormous potatoes which can take some time to cook, okay if you are doing a long cook, but you can cook smaller more manageable spuds.
- 6 large or medium potatoes
- melted butter
- sea salt
- garlic and strong grated cheese (optional)
- baking tray (optional)
Cut slices the full length of the potato about 5mm apart, but don’t cut all the way through, stop about 5mm from the bottom. One way to measure this is to place a wooden spoon handle alongside the potato and if you keep the knife parallel to the work surface the blade will hit the handle before going all the way through.
Coat the potatoes in melted butter, you can either brush this on or place in a plastic bag with the potatoes and a generous pinch of sea salt then massage well into the potatoes. You can also add some grated garlic. Place the potatoes onto a baking tray, or you could just put them straight onto the grate.
Pre-heat the Traeger to a roasting temperature of 175C (347F) and cook until they are soft.
Try inserting some slices of garlic between the cuts, then once cooked sprinkle with finely grated cheese, we used a tasty Lancashire. Or you could sprinkle with the cheese about 10 minutes before the potatoes have fully cooked and it will then melt into the cuts.
