Julie Parker
My interest in gardening & wildlife stemmed from childhood days spent working in the garden with my parents & reading books on anything from robins to giraffes. As time has moved on these influences have stayed with me inspiring the creation my own garden & leading to interests in fish keeping & the natural world around me. I still love to read & hope that the knowledge I gain will make topical reading through these articles.

Hayes World Of Christmas 2013

An enticing preview of this year's displays

From the beginning of October our Christmas department will be fully open with a completely new range of themed displays to get you in the mood. We have an extensive choice of Christmas trees & lights with a wonderful selection of decorations to make your Christmas display the best yet! Whether you prefer traditional Christmas decorations like our Nativity scenes or are hunting for something a little bit different we have a great choice to suit every pocket from a single bauble to your very own Gothic Folly! So here is a taster of what you can expect to see when you visit!

Fairy Christmas

This is a magical land where autumn merges into winter & its earthy tones are touched by Jack Frost. Subtle shades of pink are combined with soft greys, creams & bronze to mirror the fashions that have been popular this year.  Mix Blush Pink flowers with soft grey feathered peacocks & Wool White baubles to recreate a cold winter’s dawn or choose the delicate pale tones of Clay, Sand & Pearl with soft creams for a neutral look.  At the heart of the Fairy Christmas is the Fairy herself, overseeing her Kingdom from the icy ruins of a Gothic Folly. Her bodice of autumn flowers flows down to her wintry skirts combining all the shades within this display. Complete the look with crystal garlands, rosebud picture frames, wine glasses & a pale grey tablecloth.

The Enchanted Garden

Beyond the Fairy Kingdom lies the Enchanted Garden where winter prevails. In this snowy woodland scene timid doe-eyed creatures nestle amongst the icy toadstools trying to keep out of sight. This contemporary theme contrasts cool clean whites & sparkling silver with Blue Topaz & Heavenly Blues to create an icy display. It is warmed up by soft furnishings in grey & fawn in a variety of textures.

Past Times

In this display Oxblood, Classic Green & Light Gold sit well together to create the traditional colour scheme of years gone by. Give it a modern twist by introducing deep purple shades of Fig or stick to a single colour for a simpler Christmas display. Just mix & match to create the Christmas look you prefer with a selection of baubles in a range of sizes including festive robins, swinging Santa’s & chubby cherubs.

We have everything you need to decorate the whole house including traditional wreaths & garlands, scented pine cones, candlesticks & magical musical snowglobes!

Xmas Chic

Why not try a red & white display this year for a bit of Xmas Chic? Winter White is combined with Xmas Red to give a classic look that will never age. It is given a bit of sparkle with a sprinkling of silver from spotted toadstools, dotty baubles, elegant candle holders & accessories. Choose from a selection of ribbon in a range of widths to make your gifts look chic too.

Santa’s Memories

Wander into Santa’s Memories where his toyshop is situated just past the gingerbread house. This takes you back to Christmases long ago where candy canes, lolly pops & ginger biscuits hang from the tree & bags of golden chocolate pennies nestle in the branches.

There are a colourful mix of decorations from spotty & striped baubles to fabric cupcakes & reindeer plus a selection of bright ribbon to make bows for the tree or to decorate Christmas gifts. Santa’s elves have been busy in his toyshop making wooden toy soldiers, classic metal cars & fun Santa or snowman cushions to complete the Christmas look.

Goose Island

Our range of artificial Christmas trees can be found on Goose Island this year beneath the flocks that are heading south for the winter. It is an even larger selection of trees than last year ranging from 3ft to 12ft in full & half foot sizes, including pre-lit trees & Feel-Real PE trees.

New for 2013 we have increased our selection of 100% PE trees which are the most realistic looking trees yet. Moulds of real trees are used to produce the branches & the colours are more accurately reproduced to give a stunning Christmas tree that will last for years (read our article on PE trees). See the range online to help you choose before you come into the garden centre.

Christmas Lights

Whether you want lights for your Christmas tree or want to add a bit of sparkle around your house or garden we have a wide selection of mains & battery operated lights. Our experienced staff are on hand to give advice when needed & to test your lights so that you can buy with piece of mind. Apart from a great selection of lights for your tree, our lighting range includes welcome lights, acrylic animals for indoor & outdoor, decorative twigs & garlands plus wooden laser cut village & nativity scenes. This year we also have a selection of battery operated fibre optic wall tapestries based on the paintings of Thomas Kincade. Hang them anywhere in your home for a magical display that will brighten up the darkest corner!

Christmas Accessories

For a fragrant Christmas look no further than Yankee Candles who have produced a lovely selection of scented candles including Cinnamon & Christmas Rose plus candle accessories.

For the young or young at heart we have Christmas stockings, giant crackers & a range of advent calendars from simple hangers with chocolates inside to ones that you fill yourself including our gingerbread man with lots of pockets. We also have a selection of cheeky signs to add a bit of sparkle so ‘Don’t get you tinsel in a tangle’ this Christmas!

The setting is completed by a Victorian alpine scene from Lemax - the fairground has come to town & the illuminated miniature village with its local shops is the hive of activity. The snowy slopes above are dotted with chalets & there are all kinds of sports taking place from skiing & sledging to ice skating, whilst Santa looks on from his sleigh.

Christmas Gifts & Food

Our range of Christmas gifts is bigger than ever & you are bound to find something for young & old alike. There is ample free parking & you can even take a break & have a coffee or a meal in our Terrace Café to give your feet a rest. The large train set that is running in the Christmas area will keep the kids occupied as well as our toy department which has a range of toys & games from stocking fillers to arts & crafts.

We may be a garden centre but we don’t just cater for the gardener in the family. We have extended our clothing & footwear ranges to include well-known names such as Seasalt & Rieker, in addition Edinburgh Woollen Mill & Cotswold Outdoors are also on site.

Our food section has a variety of locally produced goodies & a range of special Christmas treats & leads into our well-stocked kitchenware area which contains a variety of practical & decorative items.

We also have a selection of soft furnishings & decorative ornaments, toiletries, collectible gifts & yes, plants! So get all your Christmas shopping done in one day at Hayes Garden World!
