Christmas at Hayes Garden World

We are glad to say that Hayes Garden World is open for business as usual & our Christmas displays were untouched by the floods. We have a huge selection of trees & decorations to brighten up your home plus a large range of gifts for all the family. Luckily Santa's sleigh works just as well on water & Rudolph has a brand new shiny pair of wellies so you can still find Santa in his igloo at 'The North Pole'. Our Four Seasons Terrace Cafe also has delicious heart warming meals & snacks to fortify you whilst you do some Christmas shopping.

Most of the puddles have gone but there are some closed roads in the north of the county so please check out Cumbria Travel News before you set out.

Local Children get “Stuck – In” at Exclusive Book Launch in Ambleside

Children from Ambleside Primary School enjoyed a day of story-telling, planting and gnome–hunting on a visit to Hayes Garden World on Monday, 7th April. The visit took place to mark the launch of “Gary the Gardener and the Lonely Little Flowerpot”, a children’s sticker-and-story book, commissioned by and exclusive to Hayes Garden World.

The book tells an enchanting story featuring litter-gathering gnomes, robins, dolphins and a flying car, all set in the vicinity of Hayes Garden World and the Ambleside area. Each page includes a fun activity, such as a puzzle to solve or a sticker to find, which children will find engaging and great fun.   After hearing the exclusive story read aloud, the children took part in a number of activities including an exciting Gnome–Hunt when they searched for 6 garden gnomes who were in hiding on the premises, before enjoying a packed lunch in the Café at Hayes.

The book forms the latest in the series of “Budding Young Gardeners” resource materials, which the Garden Centre has invested heavily in, in recent years, to encourage local children to develop a love of growing and gardening. Exclusive to Hayes Garden World, the book will be available for sale from Monday 7th April, priced at £3.99.

Store Manager, Leanne Coulson, commented:

“We launched our Budding Young Gardeners Club to encourage local children to develop a love of gardening and outdoor activities. Membership is free, and we now have over 1500 children signed up. Today’s launch of the exclusive sticker-and-story book is just the latest of many events and activities Club members enjoy. Our next scheduled events are our Budding Young Gardeners Easter Events including our Egg Hunt on Good Friday, 18th April”.

Wishing Well Donation

Wishing Well Donation

The team of volunteers from Ambleside First Responders received a cheque for £1085 at a presentation ceremony on Tuesday 25th of March at Hayes Garden World in Ambleside.

The funds were raised from donations dropped into the “Wishing Wells” at the entrances to Hayes Garden World in Ambleside, by customers and visitors alike. Each year, the Wishing Wells are emptied and the funds collected for donation to a local charity.

This year, one of the chosen charities was Ambleside First Responders, a team of dedicated local volunteers who are on call 365 days a year. The First Responders are trained in basic first aid and in the use of life-saving defibrillators. They are able to administer vital, and fast, emergency first-aid to casualties in the local area, until paramedics arrive.

Leanne Coulson, Store Manager at Hayes Garden World, commented:
“We are delighted to present Ambleside First Responders with some of the funds collected in this year’s Wishing Well appeal. The local First-Responder team provide an invaluable service for local residents and visitors to Ambleside.  We understand that the money our customers have donated over the last year will be used towards the purchase of additional equipment for use by the volunteer team”.

Volunteer Nick Martin commented:
“This very generous donation will allow us to purchase an extra defibrillator and kit which will allow us to respond even faster. This additional equipment could cut ten minutes off our response time, allowing responders to go direct to a call”.

“Herbie” raises thousands in Ambleside in aid of Alzheimer’s Research

Mrs Elizabeth Hayes and Emily Jayne Ritchie, Herbie's owner, plus members of the Hayes Christmas Team with the Cheque for £3804 in aid of Alzheimer's Research

Visitors to the spectacular Christmas Displays at Hayes Garden World in the run-up to Christmas would have been delighted to spot “Herbie”, a vintage VW Beetle lovingly restored in the image of the star of the much-loved Disney films. Herbie was on site to raise money towards Alzheimer’s Research, and visitors to the garden centre gave generously in order to take their own family photos with Herbie centre-stage.

Such was Herbie’s popularity with the public that donations reached a staggering £3804, all of which has been donated to Alzheimer’s Society funds.

Chris Ritchie from Barrow bought Herbie for his daughter, Emily Jane to own, and the family use him to raise funds for this very worthy cause. Says Chris:

“Our “Herbie” looks as close to the Disney original as possible he is now very much part of our family.  He works hard to raise funds on behalf of the Alzheimer’s Society in memory of Vincent Hall, my father-in-law, whom we sadly lost to this awful disease in January 2010.  We are truly delighted with the total raised by customers at Hayes Garden World and Herbie is looking  forward to raising more money towards this very worthy cause as we go through the year”.

Herbie is now taking a well earned break at Chris' garage in Barrow. If you are interested in hiring Herbie & Chris whilst raising funds for this invaluable charity you can ring Chris on 01229 822243 or reach him through his facebook page - just search 'Chris Ritchie Garage Services Ltd'.
