Cane Furniture
Hayes Garden World is well known for stocking good quality, stylish conservatory furniture at an affordable price. This year is no different; we have a display of rattan, cane & wicker from Desser & Co., a British company who have been supplying conservatory furniture since 1919. Now in the fourth generation of their family business the Directors of Desser & Company remain as passionate about quality, service and style as ever. A Desser cane suite has been individually made by hand using the highest quality materials to the most exacting standards of design and finish. If properly cared for, it will provide a lifetime of pleasure. Desser also realise that green credentials are increasingly important to discerning customers, so they follow a policy of sustainable sourcing and traditional manufacturing methods that minimise the damage to the natural environment in which they operate*.
This year they have launched another unbeatable range of furniture for living, bedroom and, of course, conservatories. Their range is crafted to the highest standards and built to be both durable and stylish with new fabrics following the latest colour and design trends to ensure you get the exact suite you were hoping for. We are starting off 2011 with three ranges for you to choose from.

Cannes

Chunky rattan weave is increasingly popular, you can see why with Cannes.

The antique brown finish gives a glossy sheen to this suite, ensuring it enhances every home by beautifully reflecting warm light off its surface. Available in Antique Brown with scatter cushions as optional extras.
If you have bought, or are considering buying cane furniture there are some recommendations to follow when caring for your furniture. It is a low maintenance product which only requires gentle wiping with a damp cloth to clean it followed by the occasional application of a good furniture polish to give it a lovely sheen. Use a soft, dry brush or vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to get dust out from between the weave. As with any furniture, the cushions will benefit from regular plumping & turning especially if it is housed in a conservatory where fabric will be susceptible to fading. It is also a good idea to move your suite around occasionally so that all parts are exposed to the sun, where possible fit blinds in your conservatory. Remember, cane furniture is hand made from natural products. No two pieces are exactly the same – which is all part of its natural beauty.
*Desser’s quality rattan is sourced largely in Indonesia, which is the biggest rattan supplier - accounting for nearly 70 percent of worldwide trade, and they work closely with local factories and growers to protect this stunning natural landscape.
Rattan is ecologically very important, growing up to 6 metres a year in areas that cannot support other land products – such as those remaining under flood waters for long periods of time. But the real beauty as far as conservation is concerned is that rattan can only grow amongst existing trees such as fruit orchards and rubber estates, so it can accurately be claimed to encourage the preservation of forests in its very nature as a companion crop.
The social significance of rattan is no less. Ideally suited as a smallholder crop, it provides sustainable income to some of the poorest people living on the fringes of forests. It lends itself to uncomplicated labour-intensive processing and generates diverse employment.
You can buy Desser & Company furniture knowing that it is produced in accordance with Government Controlled Environmental Legislation and with sustainability as a high priority. They also promote a policy of Fair Trade and provide low Carbon Emission products.
